A rare original dramatic offering from cable’s American Movie Channel, the weekly Mad Men TV Show was the story of a major advertising agency operating from New York’s Madison Avenue in 1960. The most successful ad executive at the Sterling Cooper Agency was handsome, indefatigable Don Draper (Jon Hamm), who was not only expert at “playing the game” while servicing accounts ranging from cigarette manufacturers to political candidates, but was also an accomplished ladies’ man, frequently and shamelessly dipping deep into the agency’s all-female secretarial pool. It was crucial for Draper to always be at the top of his professional form: there were scores of hungry young executives who were eager to topple him from his perch and become Sterling Cooper’s new top dog.

A lot of problems! We have the SOLUTIONS.

You can download each and every episode of Mad Men. Become a member and download anything you want. And server is amazingly fast.
As they watched the television drama “Mad Men,” Carolyn Cowen and her 16-year-old daughter, Melissa Wilpers, got a peek into the early 1960s.

And though they are from different generations, the Marshfield, Mass., mother and daughter were both fascinated and aghast at the behavior of that time and grateful to be women today.

“The stuff that was accepted is shocking,” said Wilpers, a junior at Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y. “It makes you realize how far we’ve come in actually a pretty short amount of time.”

“Mad Men” is the American Movie Channel series that debuted last year and won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series Drama. It’s up for 16 Emmy Awards at the ceremony Sunday.

Set in a New York City advertising firm, it follows the professional and personal lives of ambitious young advertising men and their secretaries, wives and mistresses. It turns upside down the image of the ideal family life portrayed in the popular television shows of the early 1960s, like “Ozzie and Harriet” and “Father Knows Best.”

The men and women in “Mad Men” smoke and drink incessantly in the office and at home. The men talk about the attractiveness of secretaries and enter into affairs with them as easily as they ask them to get coffee. The secretaries seek status from their association with men, and the wives either are clueless or keep quiet. Like the slick ads where image trumps substance, the ad men dress well and tip their hats to women, but behave terribly.

“They had gentlemanly ways, but they treated women so badly,” Wilpers said.

To the sensibilities of a young woman today, the flagrant sexism of the early 1960s is jarring and sobering. But to a generation older, it’s a reminder of how the women’s movement opened career opportunities to women and identified workplace sexual innuendos and advances as harassment.

“We were really pushing the envelope and now that’s taken for granted,” said Cowen, 56, executive director of Carroll School Center for Innovative Education in Lincoln, Mass. “I transitioned through it and my daughter’s on the other side.”

Both Cowen and Wilpers, who said she hopes to study screen writing and film, admire “Mad Men” for its impressive acting, intelligent writing and detailed authentic portrayal of the look of that era – from the tight-belted sweaters women wore that accentuated their chests to the room-size office copier.

“It’s a really smart show,” Cowen said. “There’s a lot to analyze, but you can miss some of it because you get caught up in the plot.”

Cowen finds it fascinating to see the bubbling up of issues that came to dominate the ’60s and ’70s – the influence of the youth culture, the growth of the civil rights movement, feminism and the sexual revolution.

“As a baby boomer, I find it a really an interesting representation of an era,” she said. “It’s a supposedly placid era, but it’s on the cusp of major change.”

Michelle Campbell, 44, said the show is like watching a train wreck – what happens is awful, but it’s hard to look away.

“The women fascinate me for how they put up with so much and the men disgust me,” said Campbell, a Weymouth, Mass., mother of two who is a financial counselor at South Shore Hospital. “Some of it is similar to what I went through when I worked in offices.”

Campbell recalled her horror when she worked in an insurance company in her early 20s and her boss inappropriately touched her while ostensibly showing her how to use a new piece of office equipment. That’s what came to mind when a character on “Mad Men” plays Mozart on his zipper in front of a secretary.

“He saw nothing wrong in that, but men would be afraid to do something like that now,” Campbell said. “I’m always talking to my son and daughter about how far women have come. I’m grateful my daughter won’t have to deal with the things I did when I was younger and the women on the show deal with.”

Nancy Van Leuven, assistant professor of communication studies at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass., said she loves the show for its “creepy-funny” depictions of gender and the perspective it provides on today.

“At first, wasn’t it almost offensive, how non-PC it is to think of women as secretaries or housewives, down to the belted dresses and tons of cocktails and cigarettes?” she said. “But it quickly becomes apparent that this is pre-feminist and sexist TV show is actually holding up a mirror to us.”

As evident from the passions excited by the presidential campaign, plenty of women today feel restricted by societal views about how women should behave and by a glass ceiling that – as Hillary Clinton said and Sarah Palin echoed – has been cracked, but not broken.

“It exposes much of what’s still under the surface: the hierarchies of class and gender, all that which can still divide us today,” said Van Leuven, 56. “I have lived through this period, so I remember how the work world has changed, as well as how women have or haven’t cracked glass ceilings.”

In the world of “Mad Men,” women not only are fair game sexually, but are second-class citizens. As an ad man said while discussing an airline account, “Air travel is too expensive to waste on women.”

And when the creative director, Don Draper, bought a Cadillac, his new possession gave him not just status, but sexual access.

“Wait ’til she finds out about your Cadillac,” a fellow ad man encouraged. “She’ll be waiting naked outside your window.”

In the male and female worlds, a clear divide exists. Loyalty, for example, is feminine. When Draper wanted to retain an account instead of dumping it for a better one, he was criticized: “Oh, take off your dress.”

And the sole woman who rose out of the secretarial rank to become a copy writer remains defined by her gender.

“Watch how they treat her like she’s a secretary, even though she came up with the ad campaign they use,” Cowen pointed out to her daughter.

In the copy writer, Peggy Olsen, there are hints of the coming empowerment of women and talents to be released. Rebuffing an unwanted sexual advance, she wittily chides, “I’m in the persuasion business and frankly I’m disappointed by your persuasiveness.”

The come-back, an example of the smart dialogue by the show’s creator, Matthew Weiner, caused Wilpers to laugh out loud and root her on.

“Good for her,” Wilpers exclaimed. “Just because they’re men, they think they’re so much better. We know a lot more now. With boys my age, everything for a girl is fair game. There are even shows about really powerful women.”
The network supplied the specific scene and script and you had to film your version of it. They got tons of entries. Here are the 18 finalists.

Almost all of them are quite good, and you can see that many of these people could be actors (not that a few of them aren’t already). My favorites are actually the ones where a male will take a scene featuring a female like Betty, Joan, or Peggy and really recreate the scene. Jacob Crumbine’s video is in the lead right now, and it’s great. Even if Mad Men didn’t exist, I’d watch whatever show this was. Rebecca De Ornelas recreates one of Betty’s psychiatrist office scenes and does it very well. Mike Kimmel does the same scene and he’s a natural. Valerie Long’s drunken chat with a lamp works too. Sabina Maschi’s entry is very, very clever.

You also get to see Roger Sterling as a vampire, telling a werewolf he has a nice ass.

The voting ends this Monday, so get clickin’. The winner gets a free trip to Los Angeles, $100 a day for food and transportation, and (most importantly) a walk-on role in a season three episode of the show. I should have entered, but I don’t think I could have done as well as these folks.

(S02E07) “You’re not like everyone else around here.” - Ken, to Sal

So Don Draper used to be a car salesman?

I guess it fits with the career path of an advertising guy, and ties in nicely with the plot of Don getting a new car because he’s moving up in the world of business in general and Sterling Cooper specifically. There’s a big unresolved issue in this episode though. I’m really glad they brought it up but a little disappointed that they didn’t follow through with it, though I’m sure we’ll see more of the plot in later episodes this season.

It could actually change the entire direction of the show.

So … Sal likes Ken? That was a plot that seems to come out of left field. Actually, it’s further back then that, up about 40 rows of bleacher seats, past the concession stand and the public phones. But even though I didn’t expect it at all it also seems to make sense. After bringing up Sal’s sexuality in a couple of episodes last season, we really haven’t seen it talked about this season, so I’m glad they’re going forward with it. Last year I felt sorry for Sal; this season I feel even more sorry for his wife. I wonder if she was really upset about being left out of their dinner conversation or she’s upset because she suspects the truth about Sal.

I’m also glad to see them continuing to use Ken’s writing career as a plot point.

Some more observations about this episode

- Really glad to see Jimmy back in the picture. I want the mad men of Sterling Cooper to have a link to the showbiz world of the early ’60s. At first it seemed like Jimmy was going to be a character we’d see in one or two episodes, then he’d vanish. And he still might vanish completely, but not before putting a nasty thought into Betty’s head and confronting Don about Bobbie. For the record, I can’t argue with anything Jimmy said to Don. I wonder how Betty is going to deal with this (after they clean up the vomit in Don’s new car).

- At first I thought “The Gold Violin” was a reference to the Mark Rothko painting in Cooper’s office. This is a rather Cooper-heavy episode as things go, full of many great quotes (”Philanthropy is the gateway to power” and “Nobody’s ever asked me that. Probably because it’s none of their business.”). I thought Harry would get into trouble by letting something slip in his meeting with Cooper, but it was Jane that gets the brunt of the trouble from Joan (Joan…Jane…Joan…Jane). I like this battle of the women that’s brewing, and I like that Roger is in the middle (and I’m sure Roger wants to be in the middle literally - ba ding bang! Thank you and good night!)

- I’d like to read Ken’s stories. He seems to be writing the stories of the people of Sterling Cooper (I would guess that the episode hinges on what he says to Sal - about the violin being gold but no one being able to play it).

- Also good to see the young Smith & Smith return to the show, successfully pitching the Martinson Coffee (now owned by Tetley) guys. What’s the deal with those guys?

- So that unresolved plot point I mentioned above. A woman came into the car dealership (I’m thinking it’s around 1950, if I understand what Don said to the father and son looking at the car) to confront Don. She said “you’re not Don Draper.” I thought they’d get back to that point at the very end, like they usually do with flashback episodes. But they didn’t show it again! This is something I’ve been wondering about since it was revealed that Don is actually Dick Whitman, who took Don Draper’s identity back in Korea. Wouldn’t there be someone - a family member, a friend, a business associate, a fellow Army person - who would know that “Don Draper” is still alive and know that this person is not him? How exactly did Don/Dick get away with the charade? I hope they tell that story, and it’s hinted tonight that they will.

- The picnic: the Drapers are litterers!

With “Mad Men,” I never know what to expect.

Of course, I expect complicated and evocative storytelling, the kind of television that rewards watching each episode twice.

Still, I confess I’m a little thrown this season. I wasn’t expecting it to be so sad. This season, “Mad Men” (Sunday 9 p.m., AMC) has dwelt even more obsessively on what it costs to get ahead—to win. Sometimes that cost is devastating.

My reaction—a surprising sense of melancholy as the season unfolds—shouldn’t be taken as a criticism. For any work of fiction to evoke a visceral emotional reaction is an accomplishment. Still, it can’t be denied that this season is darker than Season 1. We know the characters better, and to see them inflict more pain on one another and themselves isn’t easy.

Take Betty Draper’s treatment of her little boy, Bobby. She’s clearly still furious at her ad-man husband, Don, for his lies and infidelities. Yet she can’t quite get to Don, not the way she wants to. So she hurts their son—emotionally, not physically.

For some people, Episode 5, “The New Girl,” was revelatory. I didn’t find it so; we knew that when it counted, Don had been kind to secretary-turned-copywriter Peggy.

Peggy’s hospital flashbacks offer yet more proof of her strength of will. She did as Don instructed her and put the hospital incident, and her baby born out wedlock, behind her. Like Don, she’s focused only on the future, and on building herself a fortress of independence.

As a reminder of Don and Peggy’s essential affinity, “The New Girl” worked. Don is horrified when his calculating mistress, Bobbie Barrett, assumes that they are alike. Yet when Peggy addresses Don as an equal, after she bails him out of jail, he is surprised but accepts it. He is like Peggy.

“When you watch this season and you look back at the season before, you will see that there is already the sense that there is an innocence disappearing,” creator Matthew Weiner said in a Tribune interview before Season 2 began.

Don’s relationship with Bobbie isn’t the cause of that loss of innocence. It’s a symptom of it. If I’d hoped that this season would show Don traveling toward emotional honesty, the presence of the cold Bobbie is proof that “Mad Men” is traveling in a darker direction.

I can’t say I’m entirely pleased about the time spent on Don and Bobbie. Melinda McGraw is good in the role of Bobbie, but she and Jon Hamm (as Don) have little or no chemistry. Plus, Bobbie’s defining lack of warmth makes her less compelling than the other characters. And Don’s coldness around Bobbie stood in marked contrast to the man we saw in Season 1.

His greater alienation is sad and a little surprising, given how tender and vulnerable Don could be with Rachel and the free-spirited Midge. There was something sensual and emotionally inviting about his relationships with those women.

But given Bobbie’s coldness and Betty’s hostility, Don is more alone than ever. Is the goal of the show to demonstrate Don’s increasing alienation from others? If that’s the case, well, it’s only Season 2. What kind of shape will he be in two or three seasons from now? It’s a scary thought.

Despite a quibble here and there, I’ve got no problem with this show. Far from it.

“Mad Men” is doing exactly what it should—it’s doing what “The Wire,” “Battlestar Galactica” and “Friday Night Lights” have done at their best. These shows have created people who are so real that their pain is affecting.
