A rare original dramatic offering from cable’s American Movie Channel, the weekly Mad Men TV Show was the story of a major advertising agency operating from New York’s Madison Avenue in 1960. The most successful ad executive at the Sterling Cooper Agency was handsome, indefatigable Don Draper (Jon Hamm), who was not only expert at “playing the game” while servicing accounts ranging from cigarette manufacturers to political candidates, but was also an accomplished ladies’ man, frequently and shamelessly dipping deep into the agency’s all-female secretarial pool. It was crucial for Draper to always be at the top of his professional form: there were scores of hungry young executives who were eager to topple him from his perch and become Sterling Cooper’s new top dog.

When shows go off the air in between seasons, the actors use this long break to do some profound beard growing. The actresses might do the same thing, but I’ve never seen a picture of them in the papers to prove it.
The entire male cast of ‘Mad Men’ did the same thing and cast member MIchael Gladis gave his review of all of his co-workers’ “break beards”.
“Mad Men” has grabbed a gong at the 62nd Annual Directors Guild of America Awards which was held on Saturday, January 30. Earning one nom each in Dramatic Series category for three episodic directors Jennifer Getzinger, Lesli Linka Glatter and Matthew Weiner, this AMC’s drama has given the prize to Glatter.
In Comedy Series category, “Modern Family” has aided its pilot director, Jason Winer, to take home an award. Also among the winners was “Taking Chance” helmer Ross Katz who won best directing prize in TV Movie category.
In movie categories, meanwhile, Kathryn Bigelow has beaten her ex-husband James Cameron for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film award. Thus, “The Hurt Locker” helmer has set her name as the first woman ever to win the top award from the awards event.
Later, taking home the gong for Documentary category was “The Cove” director Louie Psihoyos. At the ceremony, DGA also handed out Lifetime Achievement Award to “In the Heat of the Night” helmer Norman Jewison. That bit with Angie (Drea de Matteo) working with Bree (Marcia Cross) on some catering commitment didn’t work out so lovingly on Desperate Housewives. It wasn’t exactly a match made in heaven, and it got kind of uncomfortable with Bree being decorous and Angie being tactless and such. But lo and behold, someone will set foot on Wisteria Lane, who this time will be an admirer of Bree’s “old-fashioned values.”
Mad Men star Sam Page, who plays the wayward hubby of Joan (Christina Hendricks) on the critically acclaimed AMC series, is joining the cast of Desperate Housewives for a multi-episode arc set to kick off in late February. Page, 33, who will also be on Greek
right around that time, will play Jeremy, a well-trained cook who idolizes Bree.
On Greek, the Shark alum will play a campaign manager who will not be good news to Cappie-Casey shippers. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin-born actor was on Point Pleasant, American Dreams, All My Children, and, to the 90s souls out there, Popular.
No new episode of Desperate Housewives this week, but on the next, Tom’s (Doug Scavo) psychotherapist may not turn out to be very nice, and Robin (guest star Julie Benz), a stripper with an Education degree, hopes to find another job. Elsewhere, Gabrielle (Eva Longoria-Parker) and Angie engage in a confrontation, while Bree tries to cheer Orson (Kyle MacLachlan) up as she fears that he might commit suicide.
“Dexter” misses the chance to be a big winner at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards when “Mad Men” is announced as the Best TV Series – Drama. This is the third year that “Mad Men” wins the category since it blocked the other drama shows from the throne in 2008 and 2009.

Earlier at the event Chloe Sevigny beat Jane Lynch from “Glee“, Jane Adams from “Hung“, Rose Byrne from “Damages” and Janet McTeer from “Into the Storm” to claim Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. She enrolls on “Big Love” as a polygamist’s second wife, Nicollete Grant.
All the winners in television category have been read out. So far, “Dexter” and “Grey Gardens” come out as the big winners by taking home two each.
“Mad Men” crew prove themselves that they work with the best. The AMC drama has just received three nominations at 2010 Directors Guild Awards. Three episodic directors, Jennifer Getzinger, Lesli Linka Glatter and Matthew Weiner, will compete against each other in Dramatic Series category.

The domination by “Mad Men” is almost being toppled by FOX’s new series, “Glee”, which nabs two under the category of Comedy Series. Similarly, HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” also has two candidates under Comedy, Jeff Schaffer and Larry Charles, who are both known as executive producers as well.
“Television directors play a crucial role in eliciting performance, advancing the story and establishing the look and feel in all genres of television,” said DGA President Taylor Hackford. “The DGA Awards highlight the most outstanding examples of excellence in television each year, and our 41 nominees in eight categories have distinguished themselves with creative, compelling projects that entertained and informed a diverse worldwide audience. Congratulations to all of them.”
The winners will be announced at the 62nd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 30 at the Hyatt Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

When we last saw Betty Draper, she was on a plane to Reno with Henry Francis by her side. Was that the end of her story, especially since Don Draper’s undoubtedly going to go on without her? Well, Matthew Weiner doesn’t like to give away much about the future, but January Jones has renewed her contract with Mad Men.
Weiner confirmed it and spoke about some other bits and pieces from the Mad Men finale. He was in a giving mood. It wasn’t just the holiday season, either. Mad Men had a great week in award nominations — Golden Globes, Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild.
First, Betty — I mean January. According to Weiner, “January’s contract has been renewed.” As for Betty as a character, Weiner referred to one of his writers, Lisa Albert, explaining that the relationship with Henry is crucial to Betty. “Betty will go through this process while learning the least amount possible.” Despite the fact that Betty and Henry have yet to make love, they are heading to a wedding. It seems improbable in today’s sensibility, but Weiner’s story is set in 1963.
Why would Betty want Henry? “He’s a handsome guy who says, ‘You’ll never have to work again.’ A lot of women like that. … Henry has been good to her, and I think she knows what he’s about, and he’s a very exciting person for her. I think he’s the anti-Don in the sense that he seems very grounded. All I can tell you is that, as a pregnant woman, when he treated her sexually at a party, something happened in her brain chemistry.”
Looking at the other major upheaval on the show, the emergence of Sterling, Cooper, Draper, Pryce, Weiner said that things like that happened in the advertising business. And other businesses, too. “If you look at the history of the era, this is what would happen-the British were taking over companies at that time. …There’s also stuff from Hollywood-the guys from Endeavor Agency left ICM in the middle of the night and took everything.”
Regarding Joan and her troubled marriage, Matthew said, “She bet on the wrong horse.” Oooh, that doesn’t bode well for Joanie.

Mad Men
creator Matthew Weiner gave a pair of interview this week.
We recap them below, but be warned: the writer reveals no real show spoilers. He’s notoriously quiet about what’s to come on his show, a quality we admire in an age where so many other series creator spill as many beans as possible in order to remain in the news (we’re looking at you, Shonda Rhimes).
With that in mind, here are excerpts from chats Weiner had with E! News and TV Guide Magazine over the last few days…
On the conclusion to season three: “The show has traditionally ended on a down note, and I wanted to end with a sense of liberation and humor. You have to go to the dark place to get there, but part of the joy that people felt at the ending was because we had earned it.”
On Don and Betty: “We’ll see when we come back, but I definitely tried to make it as unambiguous as possible that that marriage was over. She’s flying to Reno to get a divorce, with her baby and perhaps her future husband. It’s been a kind of education for me that people root for the structure of marriage. It’s never been clearer to me, two people who should not be together.”
On Henry Francis: “He’s a handsome guy who says, “You’ll never have to work again.” A lot of women like that. Lots of people don’t know the people that they’re marrying. She didn’t know Don that well. But Henry has been good to her, and I think she knows what he’s about, and he’s a very exciting person for her.”
On Betty’s continued presence: “I don’t like spoilers, but you will find out that January’s contract has been renewed [and she remains part of the Mad Men cast].
She’s raising Don’s kids. And I also feel that she was always in her own show.”
On season four: “I was very excited, when we finished, about the idea of how much would be new, and how much would be exciting, and how much would be the same, and where people would be when we came back and when we would come back, what year, what time, what month.
“I always say I don’t know. It’s not true, but it’s true on some level that I actually just try and cool my jets and get out of all of the mechanics of the show and go back to the things that matter to me, which is what you feel like when you’re watching the show. Because that’s what the show is about, believe it or not.”
Those who still crave for more “Mad Men” after the Sunday, November 8 finale can enjoy the online features presented to keep people excited until the fourth season next year. Also for those who did not manage to catch the last episode of the third season may as well dwell into a video recap that sums it up in a brief.

Additionally, there are other featurettes such as production stills of the episode, behind the scene video of the finale, a trivia quiz of what happened in that last week, a Q & A session with Jon Hamm, and a forum for the show’s fans. Beside the features related to the show, there are also perks like ‘Mad Men‘ Avatar maker, which ‘Mad Men’ are you quiz and 1960s cocktail guide. All the links can be found on AMCTV.com.
“Shut the Door. Have a Seat.” saw Don closing the old door and opening a new one. He walked away from Betty and their children and started a new chapter in his career, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. The fourth season is not yet given any information from AMC but should it repeat the even season, then it will come around July 2010.
With the third season of “Mad Men” having come to its glorious conclusion, it’s out with the old and in with the new. In “Shut the Door. Have a Seat,” Don Draper lost everything familiar and came out on the other side bruised but chastened, down but not out, surrounded by associates yet more determined than ever to reestablish family. If Season 3 was about knocking Don down to size (and then ultimately to the ground), this season finale was about him starting to pick himself up again.
Unlike many episodes of “Mad Men” in which tone dominates action, tonight’s finale was chock full of action. As such, tonight’s edition focuses less on carefully arranging the pieces and more on razing the whole elaborate construction down to the ground. And thank God Matthew Weiner realized the stale nature of the show long before its audience did: the repetitious, humorous use of “Again?” is describing the second sale of Sterling Cooper metatheatrically emphasized that the show was already going back to that well once again in order to break new ground.
